We have a proud history of celebrating New Zealand music on Waitangi Day, New Zealand’s national day, which falls within our Festival.
This coming year is no exception and we start with a presentation by Dr Richard Nunns about ‘Taonga Puoro’ (traditional Maori instruments).
The lunchtime concert that day features all New Zealand music performed by the Penderecki String Quartet, the New Zealand String Quartet and NZTrio and includes a world premiere by composer Ross Harris.
The evening concert features a new work by Jenny McLeod and features soprano Jenny Wollerman, pianist Emma Sayers and flautist Karen Batten.
Our celebration finishes with a wonderful journey to experience traditional moteatea (chanting) with the exceptionally expressive voice of Whirimako Black, who will perform with Richard Nunns in the Theatre Royal.
We highly recommend these concerts to our overseas visitors.
