Michael Houstoun

Michael Houstoun has been a household name in New Zealand for more than 35 years. After winning every significant prize for pianists in the country he went on to be placed in three of the world's most prestigious piano competitions – the Van Cliburn in America (1973), the Leeds in England (1975), and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1982). Since his return to New Zealand in 1981 he has performed regularly with every professional ensemble and is equally prominent as a recitalist and chamber music partner.

Michael Houstoun was awarded the Turnovsky Prize in 1982, made an Honorary Doctor of Literature by Massey University in 1999 and received an Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate Award in 2007.
